It does not have an accelerator or throttle, and the motor assistance only activates when pedaling. The maximum assisted speed is 25 km/h, as mandated by regulations. This speed is ideal for leisurely city rides.

Battery and Range

The down tube houses the battery, which is quite large. The bike has an estimated range of approximately 60 km.

Therefore, if you plan on riding further than that, you will need to change to a different bike.

Gearing and Braking

Gearing and Braking

The Bolt e-bike operates without any gears, making it a single-speed electric bike. Initially, pedaling may require more effort, but once the motor kicks in, pedaling becomes effortless. In terms of braking capabilities, both the front and rear of the bike are equipped with drum brakes.

An e-bike must possess effective brakes while riding on public roads with pedestrians to anticipate unexpected situations. It is essential to minimize the stopping distance while avoiding the risk of being propelled over the handlebar during emergency braking. The Bolt e-bike appears to satisfy these requirements.

While traveling at a speed of over 20 km/h, I applied both brake levers simultaneously and the bike came to a halt within just a few meters.

In addition, there was no risk of the front wheel locking up, ensuring that I couldn’t be thrown over the handlebar.

The good news is that Bolt offers flexible pricing options to suit different needs and budgets. For short rides, you can opt for their pay-as-you-go plan, where you pay a small fee per minute of usage. This can be great if you only need the bike for a quick trip or two, as it allows you to save money by paying only for the time you actually use.

You must be curious about the cost, right?

Well, the price can vary slightly depending on the city. In Tallinn, I tried out the bike and it was priced at 14 cents per minute with no additional starting fee.Interestingly, this rate is exactly equal to renting a scooter.

So if you decide to rent the bike for half an hour, you can expect to pay around 4 Euros. Personally, I find this quite reasonable.
